Lynsay Sands - One Lucky Vampire
This book is about Jake, who was not very happy about being an Immortal. He was turned three years earlier by his good friend and boss Vincent Argeneau. Jake had spent many years absolutely despising what he had now become, he had become angry at everyone who was connected with this…immortality. His mother, step-father, even his younger brother were immortal. He shortened his name to Jake Colson, then left everyone and everything he knew to start over. Soon, his “aunt” Marguerite found him. She wanted him to protect Nicole Phillips from trouble in a nasty divorce. With vacation time due, he agreed to help…reluctantly. He left immediately and took the job and it appeared he couldn’t read or control Nicole, which meant she was a potential Life Mate.
Nicole Phillips was going through one very messy divorce, but it would be over in a couple of weeks and she could finally get back to normal. Her soon-to-be-ex hadn’t really loved her in the first place, he only wanted what her lucrative artist career could bring in. He had pushed her to work to the point of exhaustion, all so he could have more, buy more, take more. She just couldn’t keep up and they’d had no life together,. She’d finally had enough (with an unknowing mental nudge from Marguerite Notte) and filed for divorce. Now, thanks to Marguerite, she has a cook/housekeeper, Jake, so she could catch-up on the backlog of portrait work she had commissioned. She also discovered had a strong desire for Jake, which made her crazy because she was done with men, at least for a while…or not.
I have been such a fan of this series from the very first book! Ms. Sands manages to wrap a sensuous love story in with a bit of mystery and still add a dash of humor every time! Her heroes are what dreams are made of; there may be flaws, but they are quickly fixed by the time the epilogue is through. Her heroines may have weaknesses, but she finds someone to come to their aid in just such a way that they don’t feel overwhelmed or ignored. Perfection. Jake was one of my favorite heroes. He lived with these Immortals almost all of his life, yet never knew it, they tampered with his mind! I can totally understand his anger.
Nicole was a treat! She wasn’t a flighty woman, she just picked herself up after a very bad relationship, dusted herself off and pretty much got on with the business of living. Then when they got together, they were perfect for each other. Neither wanted to be in a relationship, yet neither one could keep their hands off of the other, all the while trying to deny to themselves that they had found their perfect match. The one thing that I kept looking for in this book was the shared dream experience that life mates have, and it would have added, in my opinion, an interesting element to the story. Why? Because this young (comparatively) male despised all things “vampire” and I would have loved to see how he handled that one, and if he hated that element too…somehow I don’t think he would have minded it one bit!
There are many times when it comes to the part of my review when I decide if an author will be on my auto-buy list or not. Many times an author will be on my list for just one genre (yes, I know, I’m very picky!) Ms. Sands, however, is one of the elite few, that if she were to write the *gasp* dreaded cowboy book, I would read it! From me there is no higher praise!
Until Next Time!
